Welcome to
DC Drop-in Mahjong

We are a community of mahjongg enthusiasts who enjoy American-style (NMJL) game play. All of our games are open to all skill levels. We offer free instruction on Sundays at the Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum and on Tuesdays at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library.

American Mahjongg is a variant of the traditional Chinese game, played with four players using a set of 152 tiles. The objective is to be the first to match tiles to a specific hand listed on the annually distributed scorecard, published by the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL). Unlike traditional mahjong, American Mahjongg incorporates a unique set of hands, including those based on the current year, even/odd numbers, and the use of joker tiles.

Interested in learning other styles of mahjongg? We recommend attending the Tuesday sessions at MLK Library to learn and play both Hong Kong and Riichi styles.
